investigating low scores
Hi Primate Labs
I have a 32 bit vista business dell precision m4300 laptop with
intel core 2 duo cpu @2.2 ghz and 2 gb of ddr 667MHz memory. I get
a score of 949 vs your web site's score for the processor of
2374--- How do I go about investigating what is going wrong?
is my spec so different or is what is going on?

Hi Sean,
Thanks for your message, and I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Your score of 949 seems rather low for a Core 2 Duo laptop. When you run Geekbench, make sure no other applications or services are using the processor (you can do this by running Task Manager when you run Geekbench). Also, with a laptop system, make sure the laptop is connected to a power source and not running off battery power.
If you've verified that another application is not competing with Geekbench for processor time, you'll want to make sure your processor isn't overheating (an overheating processor will run slower to protect the processor from damage). HWMonitor is what I use to monitor temperatures, but there are other applications that do the same thing.
If you've verified that the processor isn't overheating there may be BIOS or EFI settings that are limiting your computer's performance. Unfortunately these settings can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so I can't provide specific guidance on what to look for. You might want to consider resetting the BIOS to the default (or factory) settings, though.
Best,
John

Hi John
I resolved it.
I had put myself on a battery power saver program ( and forgotten about it). I assumed this would be irrelevant if running off the mains- but it wasn't the case! Naturally enough I went through those options you mentioned, turning off boot services etc etc. before discovering it!
