.vpspotlight added to many, many file extensions

I'm on a Mac OS 10.12.6 laptop. For some inexplicable reason .vpspotlight was added to the file extension of hundreds of documents on my system. Not sure how this happened but now I have to go and remove it so that they open up in the correct program. Any suggestions of how this happened and an easy way to change them back? I tried highlighting a group of the documents, selecting "Get Info" and changing the default app to the correct file extension but it doesn't fix it. I'm finding that I need to change each one, which is annoying and time consuming.

Thanks for your help,

Not sure what you mean by that. I managed to solve the problem shortly after posting as I noticed that the "get Info" mac feature shows you where the files can be located. Opened the file folder and removed them and the plist . Problem solved.
