I'd like to have this answered as well. I have an old version (4.3.5) and can't open the exported files on my 2020 iPad Pro. If I upgrade to 5.3, will my old files still be usable? Or will I lose (roughly) ten years of work?
From what I've done so far, you can fix it one of two ways.... First, EXPORT ALL and export them to pdf files. Open the new app, and IMPORT by selecting the folder where the pdf's are, highlight all, and hit enter. It pulled ALL of my older files in by pdf. I was also able to open the .vpdoc file from the older version and it asked me if I wanted to update the file. I told it yes, but made a duplicate first. It worked like a charm.

VoodooPad 5 for macOS can open VoodooPad 4 files (I strongly recommend making a backup of your VoodooPad 4 files just in case anything goes wrong). Note that doing so upgrades the file format to the VoodooPad 5 file format, and can only be done on the Mac.
VoodooPad 5 for iOS can only open VoodooPad 5 files.
