For example, let's say I have a page about a character named "Sarah", and there are many other pages that have "Sarah" mentioned that of course link back to her main character page. But then I decide to rename her "Rebecca", so I change the page name to "Rebecca". But the problem I am having is that every mention of "Sarah" in other pages just becomes Sarah with no link, but I want them all to change to "Rebecca" and link to the page I have renamed "Rebecca". Hope that explanation made sense, thanks in advance!

Judetag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/479768342020-02-03T22:08:23Z2020-02-03T22:08:23ZPage name change question

There’s nothing like this in VoodooPad today, but it’s something we can consider for future versions.

Johntag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/479768342020-02-03T22:10:32Z2020-02-03T22:10:33ZPage name change question

Okay, thank you for your response. I've looked at maybe a dozen pieces of software and it seems none of them address this. Would definitely purchase VoodooPad if it did!

Judetag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/479768342020-02-03T22:24:59Z2020-02-03T22:24:59ZPage name change question

It’s a bit of a tricky problem since VoodooPad has no way of knowing if a particular word or phrase refers to a page or just happens to be the same as a page. WikiWords make this easier but not everyone uses them :-)

We will think about it and see if we can come up with a reasonable solution.

Johntag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/479768342020-02-07T09:02:37Z2020-02-07T09:02:38ZPage name change question

Heh. I saw that my earlier reaction was not posted. Let's try again.

VoodooPad 5 has the possibility of using aliases. Go to a page, look at the info, and you can see a field 'aliases'. There you can use other words that also link to the page.
So in your example, if you change the name of a page from 'Sarah' to 'Rebecca', instead of replacing 'Sarah' with 'Rebecca' all through the document, you can simply add 'Sarah' as an alias to the page. So every time Sarah is named in texts, it will link to the page titled 'Rebecca'.

It's a good functionality. I've used it with names of people and places. Say you have a page called 'Brad Pitt', but you don't want to use the full name all the time in other pages. Then just add aliases 'Brad' and 'Pitt', so that there's a link to the page if you only use his first name or his last name. Or you could even make an alias 'Angelina Jolie's husband'.

Unfortunately this functionality has disappeared in the VP6 test version. I hope that it comes back in the final product.

John said: It’s a bit of a tricky problem since VoodooPad has no way of knowing if a particular word or phrase refers to a page or just happens to be the same as a page.

There are already ways to handle that, but it takes a bit of work. When a word in a text you're typing suddenly becomes a link because you already named a page like that, you can select the word and choose 'delete link'. The word stays, but isn't a link anymore.
When you created a page, you can check which pages link to it with backlinks. If these include pages that should not link, you can go to those pages and delete the link.

Wimtag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/479768342020-02-07T17:04:36Z2020-02-07T17:04:38ZPage name change question

Thanks for your response Wim. Unfortunately I don't think the alias functionality will solve my specific problem. In my example, if I change the name of the page about the character "Sarah" to "Rebecca", because I've decided to change the name of that character from Sarah to Rebecca, even if I were to go and make all instances of "Sarah" link to the "Rebecca" page, she is still being referred to by the incorrect name, "Sarah", throughout the entire Wiki. Does that make sense?

Jude
