The battery benchmark available in 4.2.0 allows you to measure the battery performance of a device by measuring its rate of battery discharge as it completes a consistent load of processor-intensive tasks.

You can run the battery benchmark by selecting either the partial discharge mode (which runs for approximately 3 hours or until the device discharges) or the full discharge mode (which runs from 100% battery level until the device discharges). The battery benchmark provides a score along with a confidence level, which is affected by how long the battery benchmark ran for, as well as some details such as a graph of your device's battery level over time and how the workload was modified over time (if at all) to provide consistent activity.

I've tried it with two iPhone 5 batteries. One new and one with 200 cycles. They both got about the same score. If the score is based on amount of work done then it's no surprise, since the workload dropped from 60% to 50% after two hours in the old battery, but the same thing happened after three minutes on the new battery! Don't know why, their discharge diagrams are pretty much identical.

Atag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/418599102017-12-21T21:31:07Z2017-12-21T21:31:07ZBattery test, Geekbench 4

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We currently don't have aggregated scores for devices based on their age or their operating system. We're aiming to roll out more comparison functionality for battery benchmark results on the Geekbench Browser, so please keep an eye on the Browser for future updates.

@A,

I'm sorry for any confusion regarding your battery benchmark scores. Battery scores are based on a combination of discharge rate and the amount of work that the device can complete during the benchmark, to measure the battery life of a device when running processor-intensive applications. The Work % line measures how much work is assigned to the device over time, which may change depending on how quickly it is able to complete work. If I'm reading your message correctly, it sounds like the batteries you tested had very similar performance, and their rate of performing work was near a work assignment threshold which caused their graphs to differ more noticeably. However, their discharge rates and work completion rate were similar, causing the scores to be similar.

But its not possible to make any conclusions after I run a 3 hour test. Can you help provide some better interpretation of this information:

I am getting a score of 1800 for my iPhone 7plus battery (did a partial discharge but ran at 100%) over 3 hours. Its comparing it to every other device in the world (including Apple) but not the same model phone.
What does 1800 mean?

Graph shows a linear drop from 100% to 0 over 2 hours 46 mins. What is that supposed to mean? is there a range of a slope we should be looking at? Should we be glad that its almost a linear slope and no uneven dips?

Thank you. Its a great product, but pls help interpret this information. I found out about this app in a press article a week ago. It works flawlessly but I can't make sense out of the information its giving me.

Davidtag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/418599102018-01-02T22:27:56Z2018-01-02T22:27:56ZBattery test, Geekbench 4

Hi,

You can now search for Geekbench 4 battery results on the Geekbench Browser here, which should help provide some context on your device's battery score. When comparing scores, note that higher scores are better and that double the score indicates double the performance.

We will be rolling out more features on the Geekbench Browser soon to facilitate comparisons, as well as updates to the comparison scores available in the app. We also intend to release more documentation about the battery test soon which may clear up some confusion, and we are planning to release an update which clarifies some benchmark functionality in the app itself.

We don't currently have plans to sort devices by the age of their batteries, but I'll pass P's suggestion along and see if we can incorporate it in a future update.

Regarding David's question, if the battery's charge level decreases linearly it indicates that its discharge rate is not a function of the battery's current charge. On the other hand, some devices may discharge more quickly at the beginning of the test and then seem to hold their charge for longer when their charge level is low, or exhibit some other kind of non-linear behaviour. Non-linear discharging does not necessarily correlate to a hardware or software issue that requires repair, but it can help you to identify issues.

If you have any other questions or if I should clarify anything above, please let me know and I would be happy to help out.

I left the app running and didn't otherwise use the phone. My partial discharge battery score for my 6s was 1598...but, like others have asked, what does that "mean." I did search the browser link above, by clicking on the "here" link. I just typed in "iphone 6s" which then showed me a bunch of other scores for iphone 6s.

I guess my real question is, does the browser let me compare or determine if 1598 is a good score for an iphone 6s battery? Like what would a new battery in an iphone 6s score? Or am i supposed to compare that 1598 score to an iphone 8 battery score? Sorry if these questions are of the "newbie" variety.

Westag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/418599102018-01-04T14:02:07Z2018-01-04T14:02:08ZBattery test, Geekbench 4

From what I've gathered so far the benchmarks are pretty much useless. Not because they're badly made, but because of lack of documentation.

Most people don't want to "compare" their battery to a completely different model of phone, because all you can conclude from that seems to be whether the other phone has a more energy efficient processor. More work has been done. Who cares? The interesting question is how it compares to batteries with similar age and cycle count — information that apple has made unavailable to apps. Therefore there needs to be some kind of official benchmark of a brand new battery for a certain phone model.

I'm interested in comparing two of my own batteries in one device, but I couldn't even interpret the discharge diagram after getting clarification here. "their rate of performing work was near a work assignment threshold" — where does this threshold come from? Who defined it? How does that mechanism work? I have no idea, and still it impacts the graph enormously, leaving me unable to interpret it.

When I end up with batteries of different age performing the same I need to be able to make sense of the additional information in the benchmark report in order to understand why. One "score" just doesn't cut it in those cases.

Atag:support.primatelabs.com,2011-01-31:Comment/418599102018-01-04T14:08:23Z2018-01-04T14:08:23ZBattery test, Geekbench 4

Please #ignore to Unsubscribe me.

@David, Double the score corresponds to double the performance for CPU, Compute, and Battery benchmarks.

@Wes, the battery benchmark cannot be run in the background, and the device running it must have its screen on for the duration of the test.
